Fun Facts about the Mantis Shrimp
- Mantis Shrimp have 16 photoreceptors, which help them see colors, while humans only have three. This means they can see polarized, visible, and UV light, as well as so many more colors than we can! [1]
- This shrimp usually grows up to about 12 inches. However, in some cases they grow up to about 15 inches.
- A spearer is one type of Mantis Shrimp, who stab their prey with tiny barbed spears.
- Smashers are another type. They have a club in the front of their body that smashes the shrimps' prey at the speed of up to 23 meters per second, or a .22 caliber bullet.
- Mantis Shrimp can be many different colors, such as many shades of brown. However, some are bright, beautiful neon colors.
- Mantis shrimp live inside of burrows, and usually only come out to kill and capture their prey.
